So my first incubation was almost a complete failure. I used a homemade diy Styrofoam incubator and out of 20 fertilized eggs only 2 hatched, both with intervention, and only one of which made it past week 1. Her name is Lucky! We ended up purchasing some friends but I wasn't satisfied so I built a new incubator. Set it and forget it style with electronic humidity and temperature control, circulated air, and auto egg turner!

I have never used a homemade incubator, however lots of members here have with some success and some failure too. Trial and error I guess with the homemade stuff. I don't have the know how to make my own, LOL, so I purchase mine.

You might check out our Home made Incubators page of all kinds of home made stuff... https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/homemade-chicken-egg-incubator-designs-pictures

And of course definitely stop by our Incubating Eggs forums for all kinds of help, advice and of course you too can help others build their homemade incubators as well! https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/5/incubating-hatching-eggs

Good luck with all your hatches and welcome to our flock! :)

I am new to raising chickens as well! you have more motivation/determination than I have since you wanted to hatch your own! I just bought mine from the local feed store
