I am new to raising chickens so I appreciate all the questions and answers on this site. I decided to join since I do a lot of reading here. I have had Lacey, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, and Peaches, a Buff Orpington, for 2 months. They are 4 months old now (19 weeks to be exact), so I am expecting fresh eggs in a few weeks.

My granddaughter joined FFA at her high school and began raising chickens this year. Since I was raised a farm girl, I was interested in getting two from her. Her dad (our son) built a really cute coop from a discarded crate from his work, so with their help and advice, I got started. My husband takes this all with a grain of salt, but I know he'll enjoy fresh eggs!

I didn't think I would every consider chickens as pets, but these two are entertaining and quite friendly, especially at roosting time. We enjoy watching them 'free range' in our backyard. We let them out of the coop in the morning and lock them up at night. We are trying to figure out how to reserve part of our patio for ourselves! They are quite messy!!

Here are my chicks and their coop. Also a picture of the horizontal watering nipples that I really like. I bought 5 of them and put 3 on this bucket. The water stays clean and it is very easy for them to get a drink whenever they want.

Welcome to BYC! You have two very beautiful chickens. I especially like Buff Orpingtons as they are very calm, gentle birds and I keep a few of them in my flock for that reason. Good luck with your flock.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! What a cute little coop and flock! Hope those first eggs show up soon!

Chickens seem to adore patios and mess them up. About the only way to keep them away is to fence them out. If you have ever given them treats there - that could be part of the reason. When you want to share goodies with them do it away from the patio.
