Hello! My family is new to raising chickens. Our children are 12 and 10 years old and we thought this would be a good time to start. We purchase 8 chicks on March 24th. They were hatched on March 22nd and are doing great. We can't believe how big they have grown already! We have 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Buckeyes, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 1 Gold Laced Wyandotte, a Black Australorp, and what is supposed to be an Easter Egger but looks more like a Buckeye. The next thing we have to do is build a coop. I can't believe how much they charge for the pre-made ones!

Welcome to BYC! You'll find lots of help here for any questions that come up. And they will come up :). I started our chicken adventure last year and I poked around in all the forums looking for information along the way. It's a great resource and a lot of great people. Have fun!

The premade coops are cute but, have no substance. They don't stand up to weather, or predators, they usually won't hold 1/2 as many birds as the description leads you to believe. They do cost a fortune too. Sometimes people get a small garden shed and adapt it for chickens, or find freebies on Craig's list You might head for the coops section to see many different types. Good luck to you, and welcome to the BYC flock.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop built.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Sounds like you have lovely flock of nice breeds. Enjoy them and welcome to our flock!
