In the Brooder
Hi there!!
New to BYC and to raising chicks.
I love animals and have had Indian Ring Necks, Cockatiels, Conures and 3 fish tanks.
Currently have 2 mini dogs and my sons bearded dragon and my daughter's Sun Conure.
With the whole pandemic drama it's been increasingly difficult to find eggs and working from home has provided more free time.
So we decided to get a few chickens to raise for egg laying.
My current flock is 3 female chicks I purchased at a local farm in our area.
The breeds are:
(1) 3-4 week old Rhode Island Red
(2) 2-3 week old Ameraucanas
Super excited with our girls, never imagined chickens were so smart!
I have them in our home in their brooder and let them out every morning to roam in their coop & run.
They've been doing great!
Already learned how to climb the ladder and go in the coop. I've caught them roosting on their roosting bars and chilling in the coop.
Around 7:30pm they start pacing the door of the coop for me to bring them inside to the brooder. Got them on this schedule and they are super happy.
Feeding them:
Kalmbach chick starter, Manna Pro chick grit, Save a chick electrolytes and probiotic in a separate water dish
Treat them to scrambled eggs and strawberries
I'll soon start them on oregano oil and Dyfend A as preventative supplements.
Any tips on how to keep them healthy would be greatly appreciated.
I'm from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida so keeping them in the shade and wanting to install a solar powered fan in the coop to keep them refreshed.
Looking forward to checking out the site and seeing everyone's chickens!!
