New to runner ducks!

We built a 4x6 house for my 5 ducks (4 runners, 1 WH). Roof opens for easy hosing each morning. Floor is trex for easy cleaning. I have an area under the water dish that is hardware cloth so it doesn't get soggy in their hut.

They free range all day and it seems lately to be 50/50 if they are in their house or in the pond.
Mine LOVE to swim. I built them a 7x11 raised pond. They are big fans. Dogs thing it is a big water bowl. Chickens also stand at the edge and drink as well. We drain and clean the pond a couple times a year. We put some feeder fish in the last time we cleaned for them to snack on them. Um. yeah, they didn't eat them. Figured they'd all die. DH was cleaning the leaves out one day and called me over and there's a good sized fish in there LOL

Herding them from the pond is usually easy. I walk over to it (with a chicken because a chicken has decided she needs to be carried to bed each night), tell them to get out and walk behind them to get them going in the right direction. Put the chicken away and lock them up and then turn around and lock up the duck house since they ducks have made their way there.
Some days they are there on their own.

We used to have a small kiddie pool. They really loved to swim, so upgraded to a bigger one. Didn't really like the big blue pool in the yard, so built them one.

Nesting - I have a cement mixing pan in their hut with pine needles (and leaves when I have them). When they were laying in the house, they'd make a nest in that and lay in there. I'd just collect each morning. Sometimes one of them would give me an evil eye if they saw me take them.
Then one of the chickens decided to start laying in there and the ducks stopped...
Now I have no idea where the eggs are.

My runners can fly, but not high/far. They run along the garden in the morning and then fly to the pond. Some an inch above the ground and another a foot or two up. She can get some air sometimes, but not often.

Like my chickens house, they will be safe. It is like Little Fort Knox! It is within the lean to of our pole barn. Hardware cloth auto door covered secure run. My girls can sleep soundly and safely. I just needed to know how these runners act as far as flying, going to their house at night(or if I have to push them in each night) I would love to make their house with an auto door set up if that would work. I will keep the night light in mind. I just read day range poultry, awesome book, has me thinking and planning. I am prepared for the difference of summer/winter. I have a 16x9 shed lean to that I have 3 month old chicks in now, it could become the duck house, as a plus it has electricity. I plan to add a covered porch to it also that is wired in ( I use 2x4'' horse fence, no raccoon will get through that) So then if I can't let them out they have plenty of space. The chicken house that I currently have is being added on to this spring. So my covered run will be 58'x12' and the house is 3/4 that. I never want them crowded in case of bad weather and they have to be kept in. Chickens and such are so addictive!

Good planning! for the 2x4" fence, are you going to line the bottom 2 or 3 feet with hardware cloth? My ducks sleep right up against the fence, so a raccoon would be able to snag and kill a duck through that wider fence. So at night they are in a solid shelter. However, I may eventually enclose a larger area with hardware cloth (half inch metal), but that will wait for when I have the dollars. It would be nice for them in the summer. But they have a pretty cushy setup as it is. I just have fun with ideas.

Anyway, main point - raccoons grab through fence, even chicken wire.

And I do have to watch my desire for more ducks. I keep myself in check by leaving room for emergencies of all sorts.

Okay, gotta get away from the brain sucker for a while - will check back in after I get a few other tasks done. Talk about addictive - this forum!!!!

Oh the 2x4 fence is for the run only. There is another door to the main house where the serious lock down will be. This acts like a double barrier. So there is the house 9x16 then say a steel roof covered run with walls of 2''x4'' horse fence for day time use. (I also have a pesky horse I have to keep out of there) I could very easily add hardware cloth to the bottom portion for extra security reasons. I have the auto door on my chicken house, not their run. This way they can go to bed safely then I shut the run door when I get home to keep critters out of their feeders. I have not yet had any problems with my girls at night. Oh my coop is also built on a hill slope so the ground is held back by railroad ties. a digging critter would have to go through like 5' of soil to get in, and the side is a gravel driveway that is hard as can be. Think like a predator to prepare for predators. I never use chicken wire for security, its flimsy and chewable. I look at is like this, would I be able to sleep if I thought something might eat me for dinner when the lights went out. Oh my god no!! So I button it up tight. (with good ventilation)
