I will be moving to the Spokane area, hopefully in April. I would like to have a chicken coop and at least 2 chickens to give me eggs. Any advice for this novice?

Welcome! I live just outside of Spokane to the north about 10 min.
Are you within or out of town of Spokane? If in Spokane the limit is 6 hens and no Roosters. Make sure your coop is wind and heavy snow fall safe! If you are getting chicks this year our local feed stores only have them from March - April.
Good luck to you!

I will be moving to Spokane Valley. We are in the midst of negotiating the purchase of a home. Thank you for the info. I will definitely be looking for a Rhode Island Red and a Plymouth Rock.

How fun! Getting started with chickens is always exciting. If you're able to to, I'd highly recommend starting with three chickens instead of two; that way, if something happens they won't be lonely (if you get only two chicks, and one turns out to be a boy and has to be rehomed (or you lose one to predators/ illness/ etc), then the remaining one will be lonely and 'depressed' until you are able to find it another friend, at which point you'll have to deal with integration. By starting out with three, you make it a lot easier for yourself down the road (and you get more eggs!)
Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Rocks are excellent choices- I hope you enjoy them :) Where are you thinking about getting them from?

Oh Hi!! I live in Spokane too! I relocated from California about 2 years ago. I too will be getting chickens for the first time this Spring. I'm ordering from Meyer hatchery, I'll be getting a mixed flock of 6, which is my limit. There is also a store called North 40 that a lot of my co-workers use to purchase chicks.

Will you be building a coop? I recommend this as the store bought ones are super flimsy and expensive. Website called http://myoutdoorplans.com/free-outdoor-plans/ have a couple super easy chicken coop plans.

Good luck!

Did you make it to Spokane? I've been here just over one year. We're on the north side near Mead. We got 20 chicks last Aug and ended up rehoming one roo. All are doing great and some are laying already. Welcome!
