New to that poultry life

Hello, Dee --

Congrats on joining BYC and the wonderful world of poultry! There is plenty of good advice here, but as someone who has both chickens and ducks (as well as geese), my first suggestion, and you may already know this, is to house your chicks and ducklings separately because of the ducklings' incredible ability to make messes.

Waterfowl like to get in their water, splash their water, dabble their food-filled bills in their water and generally create disasters. During the day, my birds free-range together, but at night my prissy chickens get to stay clean and dry in their coops, and my dirty ducks manage to take a very small amount of water from a very small drinker and spread mucky messes everywhere.

That aside, I love them all, and I hope you will, too. Chickens are a great first step on the self-sustainability path. Good luck and welcome!!

Welcome aboard! The gang at Fluffy Butt Acres is glad to have you join the club!

Hello, Dee, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Do you have your coop and run all set up and ready to go? What breed(s) of chickens did you get?

I had a coop and run on the property already. I inherited the place from my grandparents and they used to raise them. :)
The little one that started it all is a mystery tbh. She just showed up in my yard! None of the neighbors claimed her so I took her in. I had been hemming and hawing over when to start my flock and little Barbara took the decision out of my hands.
So I got her some friends! I have 2 Orpingtons (1 chocolate, 1 yellow) and 3 Gold laced Wyandottes.

Post a picture of Barbara and we'll let you know what we think she is.
That's a great way to get started with chickens!
