So im brand new in the backyard chicken world. Started this spring and got:
2 rhode island red hens
2 barred rock hens
1 french Black/copper maran hen
1 Asian Blue rooster

3 frizzled polish (dont know if they are hens or roosters yet, and
1 blue red laced wynndotte (dont know if its a rooster or hen.

As soon as i figure out how to post pics i will post picture of my flock and the coop/run i built.

The purpose of the dog crate was to slowly introduce the smaller younger polish and the younger wyndotte to the rest of the flock that had a couple weeks on them. They are now in the same coop at night although the older hens and the rooster still intimidate the younger ones.

Its hard to tell in this picture but the other girls and the rooster have some size on the polish and wyndotte. I used the small travel crate to give them a place to hide the first couple of mornings they were all in the same coop.

Welcome to BYC. I think a wire dog crate would work better - so they can see the newbies clearly. Those crates used to be soooo cheap in the 70's I should have stockpiled them.

You could also use your crate for a broody hen.
