New To The BYC in Fort Pierce Fl

from California, I learned the hard way with a dog, I agree keep the dog separated from the chickens. I have a mixture of chickens, 1 EE, 1 Blue Copper Marans, 1 Welsummer, and 1 Aseel. My 2 1/2 year old daughter picks them all up (they squat down for her it's hilarious). All hens of course.

Hi and :welcome from Ohio. So glad to have you aboard. Just keep in mind that if you crowd too many chickens together it will create other problems like feather picking, fighting and cannibalism. 4 sq feet per bird is wise. :thumbsup

Thank you for the advice.
I have decided to go with a sturdy mesh floor for easy clean out. We want chickens for the eggs and if they are pretty it will be a bonus. I made a fence for my garden but I think I will use it for the chickens instead (easier to keep them in than out). It is a 16x16 2.5'tall. I'm am still unsure of the breeds but it looks like Rhode Island Reds are gonna be what we will go with. Now the question is Rooster or NO Rooster? I heard you really don't have to have one but is it safer for the hens.
