Hi, my name is Erica, I'm from Kentucky, and I'm just getting started with raising chickens. I have 15 so far, I would have more but the first 8 up and disappeared in the night one night and have been showing up in various places dead. Some creature of the night has had a good time with them that's for sure, and a shame. But now that we have the pen properly sealed off, the only danger they are in is from hawks or owl's. As long as we get them all put up at night, they'll be safe from owl's too.
So far I have two Buff Orpingtons, three Rhode Island Red's, two ISA Browns, one Aracauna, one plain ol' white chicken (not sure what breed she is), three Barred Rocks, and three New Hampshire Reds.
Other than the chickens, there's my hubby and our two kids as well. My hubby could care less about chickens, he worked for an egg processing plant for nearly 10 years and has no desire to deal with anymore chickens. So my kids and I are the ones enjoying the chores and raising of our chicks.
I know I have a couple more months before my eldest chickens start laying eggs, but I'm so excited!

I'm sorry you lost so many of your very first flock. Hope you don't lose any more!
