Hello from Connecticut and welcome to chicken keeping! In response to your question: I think the best advice is to read up on the hobby as much as possible. While you've certainly found the information mother-load here on BYC, I found it helpful to get reference books like "Raising Chickens for Dummies". It covers all the essential stuff in a very straight-forward, readable way. There are lots of books out there, but not all speak to backyard chicken keepers. I hope you enjoy the hobby as much as I have the past 9 months!

Your best bet is to go to the raising chicks, and read the posts, and if you still need help, start asking away! Good luck!
