My husband and I just completed our flock today!!! We have 14 chicks total: 6 Rhode Island Reds, 3 Light Brahmas, 2 Black Australorpes, 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes and 1 Ameracauna all under their week mark. We started off thinking maybe 3-5 and that number quickly grew. This is only our first week as chicken people and we are totally obsessed. We have two younger human girls one who recently turned three and one who is approaching her first birthday. Both girls are thrilled with the chicks. My husband is now very out numbered with two female dogs and an obnoxious female cat. Very excited to learn and grow into this new venture.

Congrats on the busy household!

I found when I had very little ones, it helped a great deal to insist that they only touch and pet the chicks with one finger only. No grabbing, no holding, no picking up. They could sit cross legged on the floor, and I would put a chick in the middle of their legs (if they were the kind of child that wouldn't jump, and could stay still) or they could have the chick run over their hand, if their hand was flat on the ground in the chick brooder.

With oodles of repetition I was able to get two year olds and older to follow the rules. Not sure about younger than that, but then I had all boys (love to be rough).

Welcome to BYC!!!

Oh, I should add, it helped to keep tears of disappointment to a minimum, if I gave them a "big boy" something to do instead. Like, sprinkle a bit of feed on the chick bedding to get the chicks to eat, or help weed the garden (where it is OK if they rip everything out, best to have a 'kids bed' and a 'parents bed')
