Hi there! So happy I found this wonderful community to help me navigate my first flock. We are raising 4 chicks we got from the local feed store and have enjoyed them so much! I’m not sure of the breed, the only thing they said was “brown layer”. Either way, they are so funny and we are loving being part of the chicken community

I also wanted to add that we are in the suburbs, so I’d love to hear any tips and tricks for those raising chickens in a smaller yard. I have spent hours reading through threads on BYC and quickly realized that most prefer to build their own coops. We found a greatly discounted prefab coop for now and plan to enclose it with a much larger run that we build ourselves. The chickens will also have access to free range multiple times a week.

This is the prefab coop we got for $250, I’d love to hear any suggestions for improving it (hardware wire, waterproofing, maybe paint to protect the wood?) We are only allowed 4 chickens so unfortunately can’t expand our flock beyond that. Looking forward to reading your responses!

Welcome to BYC! How many nesting boxes does it have? And how old are your chicks? This is a mix that I have used in the past for my chicks and it helps a lot! View attachment 4048527
Thank you!! My chicks are a week old (at least I think they are 😂) The coop has a nesting box on each side, I believe there are dividers in the nesting boxes as well.
