Today I bought a chicken coop, now I need some advice on which chickens would be the best for my area. I live in sunny California. During the winter the coldest its been is mid thirties. During the summer the high is about 115. I would like a high yielding egg layer and a friendly chicken would be great also! I can't wait to get started! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello also newbie here from Wa, Australia!

Welcome . You are going to need very heat resistant chickens. Generally chickens tolerate cold much better than heat. In hot climates chickens require,,shade, shade and more shade - natural or manufactured., and lots of cool fresh water.

If you go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum you can locate and post on your state thread. California is so large, they are several threads for instance, Northern Cal. etc. You will want the one that is closest to you. Then ask what breeds do best, how they get them to survive the heat and blazing sun.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I would recommend Black Australorps, which are extremely hardy in both heat and cold, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. I raised them in the Corning, CA, area where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (sometimes more), and while my other dual purpose breeds were listless, panting, and holding their wings out, my Black Australorps were going about their usual business like troopers. It's not surprising that they are very heat hardy considering that they are commonly raised in the Australian outback where it gets very hot. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Hello from another new chicken person!! I researched the heck out of which chickens to buy that were available in my area and one of them was the black australorps. I've only had them for about 5 days so I can't tell you how they will do yet.

I bet the California thread like the other member suggested would have good information but I found mine on mypetchicken.com (I didn't know BYC had a where am I thread). It has a handy "which chicken" search where I selected what I was looking for.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds

Hi and welcome to BYC!

So glad you could join our community! Some breeds that I would recommend are Red Sex-Links, Black Sex-Links, Australorps, Orpingtons, Plymouth Rocks, and Rhode Island Reds. Those usually have good temperaments and are very good layers. They should do fine in your climate.

Hope you enjoy BYC as much as we do! Good luck with your future flock of chickens.
