Hi! I'm Shonda. I'm very new to the farm life. We live in Arkansas, out in the sticks. We currently have 8 chickens which consist of:
2 Rhode Island reds (1 may be a roo)
2 brown leghorns
2 black jersey giants
1 cochin rooster
1 spitzhauben

I'm still working on sexing a few of them. I was sure my Spitz was a male, apparently I was wrong! 1 of the RIR has a larger comb and it's red already whereas the other is small and not red. It also has reddening areas where it's woddles are coming in. They are approx. 7 maybe 8 weeks old. We are just starting this adventure. We have our 8 chickens, 1 pregnant sow, and 3 dogs plus put 3 wild kids.

I am new to this as well. When did you start noticing the red on your RIR? I have two and think they are both hens, but they are 6 weeks....so hopefully I will start to see in the next few weeks for sure. I do have 3 roos from sex links and one has started getting its waddles and more pronounced combs. But two haven't gotten any red waddles starting yet, so I know it could still be a little early. They all hatched at the same time. Good Luck on your new adventure!

just within the last week or so My RIR comb and down by woddle area started turning red. They are all starting to fight and pick at each other. I know it's time to get them set up outside.

Welcome!

As you have already received links to some good starting points from Ken, I will just wish you all the best.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
