So glad to hear about your son wanting to own chickens and to join 4-H. Both are great experiences.
A couple points of advice:
-TSC doesn't sell silkies. They sell breeds that are good for meat and egg production, not ornamental. The easiest way to get silkies is to order them online and have them shipped at a day old from a hatchery.
-I would suggest starting off with 4-6 chickens. 4 is the NYS minimum number per flock. NYS also has a law stating the minimum number of chicks to be sold by a retailer to be 6.
-Start planning the coop now. If you have a garage, it would be great to build a coop in it during the winter so that it's ready by spring and you would only then need to build a run.
-It might be best to enroll your son in 4-H sooner than later since most 4-H livestock clubs to chicken egg incubation and hatching in the spring. It would be an invaluable experience for your son to hatch his own chicks and raise them.

Welcome to back yard chickens!!!:weethere is a lot of info here. I just started in August of 2017 and use this sight for lots of info. I said 6 chickens and got addicted and now have 16 chickens. Good luck and have FUN:thumbsup:ya.

X2 to Teila's advice, get over to the Learning Center, and read up on coop design and requirements. I also recommend you look at the brooder heating pad articles. Please prepare for their arrival before they arrive. I had my brooder supplies sent one week prior to the chicks and had it set up on a pretty tight schedule, tight as in down to the wire I was still making adjustments on the day of arrival.

One final point start thinking about predators now, silkies aren't known for their predator avoidance smarts! I really do not want to see your hearts broken by the loss of a sweet chicken.
