I live in Louisville KY I/we have a small farm at Falls of Rough Ky...that is our dream place...we have a fully functioning apartment with everything needed for comfort ...in our barn...we have and rotate a few cattle every year...with the exception of my pet cow...crazy daisy (she thinks she is a lap cow)...lol...gotta watch her...anyway I grew up with chickens in my life and want my grand children to have that bit of farm life quality added to the fast passed life all kids seem to have these days ...I loved them and for most of my adult life wished I could find a way...and the time...well...that time is now...

I bought 20 eggs from a npip breeder below is the list of eggs plus the added 4 she sent
Due to hatch March 19-2013
2 Coronations Sussex
4 Light Sussex
3 Olive egger's
3 Ameraucanas
4 Blue Lace Red Wyandotte
4 Rump less Tufted Araucana
4 Wellsummer (really dark brown eggs)

I learned 2 hard lesson's ...Of the 18 viable eggs only 8 survived after they hatched...2 I helped after they pipped but did not get out after 24 hrs...both died...Now I feel a bit sick at this moment...my temp is right in bator...my humidity is correct on the high side...but the babies are almost shrink wrapped...so in a moment of OMG I decided to open all the rest this is early on March 21 ...I knew it was going to be sad sad sad....I was too late to save them...
IT Was MY FAULT...did not know this at the time matter of fact just found out Thur reading ...It takes very little light coming Thur a window curtain in a bator to magnify and bake them...Not a mistake I will ever make again...moving the bator to kitchen table so we could see them better hatching...

Now before I tell you about number 2...let me mention a few of my other babies...I have a 14 year old Lab Lola (who walked in my yard and never left 12 yrs ago...who has advanced hip displaysia she takes meds but is and always has been a member of our family...living in the house...then there is my sweet rescue from a person in Bardstown Ky who's owner tossed her so hard across the room she broke her front teeth without even seeing her...I had my sister pick her up so I could get her the next day (my daughter had just given birth to my youngest grand daughter the day before...anyway she had been confined to a small cat crate most of her life...I was concerned about her mental health...and I was a the bigger the better kind of dog person...she was 5lb at that time 2lb under weight according to vet LOL...OK...she had her teeth pulled 3 ...,got rid of cat crate....she calmed down in about 2 months she just bloomed and is AWESOME...sweet...and not crazy...

she kept having false pregnancies soooo...I found a breeder of poms and after many conversations we met and she let me borrow her little almost 4lb coco ...did not work...Sadie was going to eat him for a snack...but we fell in love with coco thinking hes very old with the 1 complete cataract on right eye...well a few weeks later she called and is quiting with breeding...she has about 40-50 poms ...she asks if I want coco...YES...so after all the minor details...hes double registered by the way...I take him to vet...get shots same as I did with Sadie...thought he can live his golden yrs with us...vet tells me hes only just turned 3...wow...so now the eye...whats up with that...after several tests and different meds...he has dry eye...sounds simple right...nope his is complete dry eye...no tears at all...can not they say be fixed so my choices put super false tear meds in eye 3-4 or more as needed in his eye...or sew it shut...did i mention she said he could see out of it...so anyway...i do the meds until such a time that might come i can not keep him comfy in that eye....

my daughter also moved leaving me with a a cat with 1 eye that she is almost blind in...the other was gone when she adopted her sweetie cat

now hard lesson number 2 with the eggs...my baby was 2 weeks old before i really noticed it has a cross beak...I felt upset then wondered if it could be fixed...well Y'all know the answer is no...it is from my hatching eggs npip ...but i have found out It is only strongly suggested not to breed or sell hatching eggs from chickens with this...I have found her a home as a pet with a family friend who has chickens but no roos...does not plan on getting 1...anyway...I knew I could not keep her and was dreading the choice if I could not find her a home...Gee i started a book with my rambling here...

Thanks for letting me join

! Great to have you with us! That was quite an intro! Good luck to you - hope you enjoy BYC!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

While crossbill can be genetic, it is also often just due to malposition of the chick.

You might want to check out the article "Hatching 101", look for it in the Learning Center

You are a very compassionate person please don't be so hard on yourself. When you visit enough threads on here you will see some of those with the most experience suffer the same losses you did.

Well...sometimes things just don't go as intended my little cross beak was turned down this weekend...I made sure they knew the in's and outs of her care...and that ?...I guess i scared them...but I feel it was the right thing than just handing her over without them knowing she would always...if she survives need at least some special care and prob isolated feeding...I am at a loss ...I don't know what to do...

Hi and welcome! Poor little cross beaked baby. =( Maybe you can keep looking for her a home, and eventually someone who is able and willing to give her the care and attention she needs/deserves will come forth :)
