Hello,
I just wanted to introduce myself. I have been getting lots of great info from this site. I thought I'd better join, to be able to post and comment!
I am fairly new to keeping chickens. I have 1 Buff Orpington, 1 RIR, 1 (supposed to be an Ameracauna, but doesn't conform and lays a brown egg) 4 Ameracauna chicks (from a different breeder), 4 Chantecler chicks, 3 Silkie chicks and 2 Muscovy ducks. I also have 25 meaties coming tomorrow and 24 random eggs in my incubator! I am now a chicken/duck addict! My husband has been a busy man expanding the coops!
On top of all those guys, I have 2 senior Boston Terriers, and 2 young French Bulldogs! If all goes well, I will have a litter of Frenchies this summer/fall too! Busy, busy!

Hi. You do sound busy and welcome to BYC. You have a great assortment of chooks but just wondering what your buff orpington is like- temperment wise and attitude, i know some one who breeds them and says they are wonderful and i have been debating whether to get one or not. I've been leaning towards getting one but i heard they get bullied by other chooks. I have 2 silkies so would it be okay putting the orpington and silkies in the same pen? Just wondering, thanks for any advice.

Hi Chirpy chickens!
I absolutely love my Orpington! She's my favorite :) She is on the top of the pecking order in my small flock, so they can definitely hold their own! She has a great personality. She runs right up to me when I'm in the coop. I had an orpington roo that I gave away and have regreted it since. He was the same way. Super friendly.
She was the only one of my girls to go broody though. She was very nasty when I approached the nesting box. I moved her into her own spot and gave her some eggs to incubate. None of them hatched though :( They turned into a green rotton mess all over her belly. She let me give her a bath, and really seemed to enjoy it. She even let me blow dry her!
When she's not broody, she lays very well. I get a nice big egg from her everyday.
I had silkies with my chickens, but they all died :( I'm giving it another try. I was worried about the size difference, but they all got along just fine. I even have my Muscovy ducks in with my chickens. My RIR chases them sometimes, but otherwise they get along well too.
I would get more orpingtons, the are sweet! Some of the eggs in my incubator were given to me from the guy I gave my roo to. I'm not sure if they are mixed with something else though. It'll be interesting to see.

I Used to live in BC! I lived near Vancouver for a few years and outside of Vernon for a couple years. Beautiful place, but the cost of living is outrageous!
