In the Brooder

I have a small amount of experience with chickens. I looked after a pair of hens when I house sat for a friend and I have some experience from looking after my cousin’s chickens.

I don’t have any chickens at the moment, but my family and I are looking to get some which is why I am here.

I’ve done some research on raising chicks and I have some concerns regarding brooders or lamps. I live in the northern part of the state of California. It can get pretty hot here and I worry about the chicks getting too hot. How hot is too hot for them?

Is there a place that rents out brooders?

Welcome to BYC! :frow

I find a 60 watt lamp works well for only a few chicks. If you do decide to use at heat lamp, be sure it has a red or purple tint/emits no light at all. A bright heat lamp can prevent chicks from going to sleep. 95 degrees Fahrenheit for the first week, and lower it down 5 degrees each week until your birds are ready to go outside when fully feathered (usually at around 6 weeks).

Your chicks are too hot if they are spread around the outside of the brooder, panting and trying to get away from one another. Too cold if they are cuddling up to each other directly under the heat source and just right if they are running around happily chirping and having a rest every now and again. When darkness falls, if happy and content they will go to sleep.

Best of luck.
