Retired from public work and pastor a church.
I have 6 hens . Purchased a sack of scratch and a sack of laying pellets. How much do you suggest I feed them and twice daily or just in the evening? Thanks

Chickens need to be fed twice a day, I feed mine as close as possible to 12 hours in between meals, I get about 1 egg a day this way, you could also have food out 24/7 if you like, but I don't, breakfast and dinner, no more no less for mine, and hens need 4 ounces of food a day.

Layers (Which is what I assume you have) need about 1/3 a cup of feed a day. A lot of people recommend feeding them twice a day. We only feed ours once a day due to life.

Feeding them in the morning is better if you're not free-ranging them. If you are free-ranging, then keeping them hungry enough to properly forage during the day helps.

If they do forage, see how little you can give them a day by decreasing your feed incrementally and seeing where egg production begins to drop. Move back to where it didn't drop. Hens do get fat and it's no better for them than it is for people.

Scratch is really a treat for them. Treats should never exceed 10% of their total diet.

Welcome, so glad you found us. We keep the food out all day. They eat as soon as they come out of the pen, then they go free range and as they come in at night they grab a small bite before bed, lol. I have 80 chickens so don't think I could do the feeding twice a day or even once a day. I pick the bowls up every night and clean them and get them ready for the next day.
