Hi! My name is Heather. I live in Southern Virginia I am a stay at home mom of 2 kids, a Siberian Husky, a Beagle and a Hound Dog; in addition to 3 cats. I have been thinking about getting 4 hens because this is something I have always wanted to do. Not sure where to start.. which breed or how to make the best cope. So as of right now I am in the researching process. I do know that I will have an inclosed caged area instead of letting them roam since there are cats outside and hawks that always fly overhead.
I am wanting a breed that is good with children and are calm. Should produce some eggs but doesn't have to be too many and would be good for my climate hot/cold. An easy hen for a beginner like me who has no experience.
Feel free to leave suggestions
:)

! Pleased you joined us! There are a lot of friendly, docile, and quiet breeds. There might be as many opinions as there are types! I am partial to Buff Orps, Speckled Sussex, and Rocks. I also like the sex-link varieties. Below is a handy dandy chart where you can do some comparing by trait. Good luck and have fun!

you could head over to "where am I, where are you," section and post on your state thread. People in your area could best tell you what breeds are good in your climate, etc.

If eggs aren't that important you might like the silkie breed kids really seem to like them and they are usually quite docile.
