I have 13 chicks in all and they are of various breeds. I also have 2 dogs that love to sit next to the brooder box and if the chickens start to squawk to much they start to cry and run around the box looking in. I do have kids as well but they are older and no longer live with me, so my dogs and chickens are my kids now lol.

I can relate to that. I have 12 year old leghorn hens and 3 silkie and 3 olive egger chickens on order. my cat has been around them and they come to meet her when she goes by the run. I have one sick hen in the basement and the cat doesn't bother with her unless there's a commotion then she has to see what's going on. my children are all grown and out on their own. my chickens are now my babies. Hubby thought he was going to keep some as layers and some as meat birds. silly man!!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congrats on your chicks :celebrate How old are they? I have some six day olds out in my brooder shed and when I go to them at the door the dog is not far behind me!! He too likes to sit and watch them like he's a crazy mother hen.
Wishing you the very best of luck with your chicks, be sure to ask any questions you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Be careful and keep a close eye on your dogs. As many BYC members can attest (some to their sorrow), dogs and chickens do not generally mix well. We get lots of letters from new members who are shocked and horrified because their seemingly benign dog (even small ones like chihuahuas), suddenly and unexpectedly decided to chase and kill their chickens. And once a dog has killed a chicken, it's next to impossible to break them from doing it again. Dogs tend to either view chickens as prey, or else as chew toys. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chicks.
