Hello I"m TheMadHatter, but you can call me simply TheHat or Hatter.
As the thread title states, I"m new to the site and to backyard chickens. New to chickens period actually. The extent of my know how with chickens is, I like eggs for breakfast and chicken for dinner.
With the consistently raising costs of food, it's now reached the point (for me that is) from what I see researching online, that it's simply more economical to raise my own feed, and chickens, for (hopefully) getting at least some of my own eggs.
I won't extol the virtues of eggs, because I"m sure everyone here knows how great they are as a food and (most importantly for me for health reasons being post gastric bypass) for a source of protein.
So I would like to start raising my own chickens, to (hopefully) produce my own eggs for my own and my families own, consumption.
My first huge question though is this. Is it legal to own a few chickens for that purpose, say ten?
I live in Butler County in the city of Hamilton Ohio.
I've looked and looked and can't find anything to tell me whether it's legal or not to have eight to ten chickens to produce one's own eggs.
Although I've a neighbor who has roosters who swears it is...but I"d like to be sure as I can before getting into something and trouble with the gummamint.
If anyone here has any information and would be so kind as to post it here, or to send me a private message with some info as to whether it's even legal to own them here, I"d very much appreciate it.
Regards,
And nice to meet you all!
