fortunately chickens can't get rabies. I doubt that the fox had it or he would have attacked you. Foxes can appear at any time of day or night. They adapt to human lifestyle - days when garbage is put out. Time of day outside cats/dogs are fed, and so on. They are opportunists, they will take anything they can get.
