New to the world of chicks

Hello to all from Atlantic County , Nj. I signed up to this forum/blog prematurely , however, I love reading all the post, lots of good advice. Let me start to explain. Our beloved Boomer (yellow lab) passed away just about a year ago, 12 years old. He was our world and the best dog, friend and companion anyone could have. We had decided that we just are not going to get another one. But we knew there was still something missing in our lives. Then one day a few weeks ago, I decided to start researching on how to raise chickens, it just came to me (i think that maybe Boomer was trying to tell me that he is ok and time for me to move on, I was broken hearted). Anyway, I bought the subject up to my husband and he was all for it. We have both been so excited about learning & studying on how to raise chickens, we having had much time to be so sad anymore. He has already started to clear our area and build the coop. We won't be getting our new baby members until the beginning of July, but we want to make sure everything is ready for them. We are so excited. We're looking at the Buff Orpingtons. I read that they are very docile as we have grand children ranging in ages of 16 yrs to 1 yr. with more on the way. I hope we made a good choice..... Whelp, I'm sure I'll be having a lot of questions in the near future and hopefully getting some good advice from all you pros out there.? p.s. Sorry this post was so long...

Hello and
welcome-byc.gif
from Southern PA! I am originally from NJ. So sorry about your dog! My oldest pups are only four but are large breeds - I hope I can keep them healthy, and be lucky enough to enjoy as many wonderful years as you had with your Boomer.

Good luck with your chicken adventure! I have two buff orpingtons and they are the friendliest of the bunch.

Hi and welcome from Northeastern PA!

I have just started on the chicken adventure myself, although I wasn't as prepared as you will be, I've got 9 soon to be 10 chicks. Six of them are Buff Orpingtons. I'm hoping mine are as sweet as so many say they are for the same reason, grandkids. I have a 3 1/2 year old granddaughter and 2 six month old grandsons.

Welcome from the California coast. You'll be so glad that you are prepared for your little chick. They are so vulnerable.
Your grandchildren will always be entertained when you have chickens for them to play with. Our Buff Orpington "Daisy" is our tamest. Follows me around and jumps up in my lap. If you want to see her, visit the website below. When I get more chicks, I'll certainly get another BO. Have fun!
