New to this, but excited to get started

Glad to meet you, Rachel. What a good idea to do some learning and research first! Others have given you some good advice.
Can you have chickens where you live? How many? Roosters allowed? Usually the simplest is to call your town hall or government or HOA. But BackYard Chickens (BYC) has a list of ordinances, and advice on how to help change the rules.
What do you want the chicken for, and where must the chicken live?
You can find lists of breeds with discussions about their advantages and disadvantages on BYC, but also lots of other places. Hatcheries actually do a pretty good job describing them. And Here is a nice description. Here is a chart. You may notice sometimes discrepancies in descriptions, which is a bit puzzling. I think there must be ranges and differences within breeds, and maybe certain lineages have different characters within the same breed. That's why reading a hatchery or breeder's description might be helpful.
You need to prepare:
Incubator (if you plan to hatch!)
Brooder (if you plan to get day old chicks)
Coop and run (no matter what). Look at the huge variety of coops, and info on how to weatherize them for different climates, and how to proof them against predators. Different choices of how to build or modify, for different budgets.

You will discover lots more information in articles and discussion threads. poke around and explore.

Best wishes, and have fun!
