Empty nesters in our 60's living on a 1/4 acre neighborhood lot. I grow about 600sf of vegetable garden year round in N Florida. Want to add chickens to the mix. My plan is to purchase 10 unsexed Barred Rock chicks as a dual purpose bird. Ultimately hope to have 4-6 adult layers till the end of their 3rd year. Will eat the roosters if any. I have sufficient space to house them in a tractor. If I can find a supplier to purchase 6-10 Cornish Cross at a time I would like to add another small tractor for meat. About 5 birds a month would be enough chicken for the two of us. I also have no interest in spending a whole day processing. A couple at a time, hand plucking is manageable. I also don't need these birds to grow quickly. More forage less grain. Hope to kick this off after my March planting. Please share your advice and opinions.
