Hello everyone. I am new to keeping chickens and look forward to hearing from everyone. I recently finished my coop and run. I put some grass in the coop so the hens can make a nest. My question is do i need to put something in the nesting boxes or will they make their own nests like other birds. Also I live in S.E. Indiana any suggestions on types of chickens

Hi everyone. I have been raising backyard chickens for a little over a year now. I have used the advice on this site so many times that I thought I should finally join. :)

Glad you joined us!

I use dried grass clippings in the nest boxes since they are soft and mat together well. Hay and pine shavings are also good for the nests.
Two of my favorite breeds are Wyandottes and Dominiques. Both are good layers, cold tolerant, and very docile.
Good luck with your flock!

@JulieNiman , Welcome to BYC!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Congrats on finishing your coop and run! Do you have nest boxes or just bedding for the hens to make their own nests? It's best if you have a separate place set aside for the hens to lay eggs. If they lay them wherever they want, you will end up with messy and possibly broken eggs.
