Hi! My family is just getting in to some homesteading activities - gardening, more DIY; and now we would like to tackle our first poultry project - raising just two ducks at first. My youngest daughter (8) has always loved ducks, so we thought we'd try there. I know very little, so trying to find out as much as necessary before we begin. Could we transform an old little tikes playhouse into a shelter for ducks? Also, we'd like ducks that are pretty good layers, but also will be fairly docile and friendly - any suggestions?. We have a small yard, and the ducks would have about a 16x10 foot area to be in including their shed, and we would put in a baby pool during warm weather. Would this be enough space for two ducks? Otherwise, we will have to fence in the rest of the yard that isn't for gardening. We could do it, but we would probably hold off another year and plan more. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cayuga ducks fit that bill. Friendly, one of the more quiet breeds, good layers. A little tikes playhouse would be just fine, as long as you make a bit of a ramp up and over the door sill (if it's more than a few inches high).

And their black feathers are gorgeous in the sunlight with iridescent blues, greens and purple glints.

A kiddie pool will do just fine for 'em.
