Hello, I am new to raising chicks. Mine are about 2 weeks old. I have 4 standard size, a blue Cochin, a buff orpington, a plymath barred rock, and an americana. I also have 2 silkies. For the first week, they we're all in my brooder in the basement. The small silkie had pasty but all the time. I tried to clean her, but then her behind never seemed to dry and fluff back up. We went with the mother hen heater, that has the heating plate they sit under. Anyway, the little one was always under it. Not growing as much as the other silkie, I assume because she was not eating enough due to being cold. So I moved both silkies up into a small brooder in my bathroom so it was warmer, and I could keep a better eye on her. She is doing better, pasty butt every once in a while, and eats, drinks, and sings happily. My question is, is this going to affect them being accepted back in with the other chicks, who are now 3x the size of my silkies? I want them to all live together, and I have been having "play dates" for at least an hour every day where I put the silkies back in with the others just so they are still familiar. I'm afraid my silkies are still small enough to be kept separate..... I don't want them getting stomped on! The bigger chicks are pretty rambunctious now. Are my bigger chicks going to kill my silkie runt!!??

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I think putting the 2 silkies with the rest for multiple sessions a day will help them all remember each other. Try to keep them together as often as possible.
Perhaps offering the silkies some poultry nutri-balancer and cooked eggs will help them get strong enough to stay with the others.
Good luck with them.

Thank you! I did give them some hard boiled egg with the chick starter feed mixed in. They loved it for the first two days, then kinda stopped eating it. I also did an electrolyte in the water, and later did a little apple cider vinegar. All of it seemed to help my runt. The bigger chicks don't seem to go after her in the brooder, but they do step on her and just kinda act like she's not there. It's like it's better for her to be separate, but better for the flock to keep them all together! I think I will just have them all be together for most of the day, and seperate at night to make sure, for now....
