(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, less than 1 month ago.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
5
(3) What breeds do you have?
-3 sold as Americana pullets.
-1 sold as a Production red pullet.
-1 rooster that appears to be a cross between Naked neck and Cochin.
(Some FIL advice was that a rooster is needed for protection and egg laying. Now that I have him, I may have made a mistake because he needs to be kept separate from the young females for now. However, he is sweet and I love him.)
-1 possible American Gamefowl hen that came to our yard and didn't leave for a couple weeks. Now that we built a coop and run and bought friends, she has gone missing. She started this and then took off.
I really hope she comes back as the neighbors said that she wasn't theirs. Helga, was a tough and strong hen who roosted high in the trees and had huge spurs.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I enjoy their company and hope to have eggs when they are ready.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I used to enjoy raising and breeding some arthropoda such as mantids, roaches, and some spiders. I just keep the occasional spider other injured arthropod now. I am starting to breed mealworms (because of it's simplicity and ease) for the chickens and may get some other feeder type insects going because it may be fun for me and nutritious for the new flock.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Have a husband and adult daughter, cats and a Ball python.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have seen the site online plenty of times over a couple of years, may have questions and photos to share.
