Hi All - after I successfully pulled off my first Thanksgiving dinner where all 17 guests were impressed to be eating home-grown corn, green bean casserole and sweet potatoes, I decided that I wanted to try raising turkeys... (have one for the table next year and also do a traditional BB). Yesterday I built a temporary coop, today (I swear I'm not impulsive!) I picked up a young pair of Narragansetts. Let the learning curve begin, lol! Already they're hiding in the section where I thought they wouldn't - guess turkeys make up their own set of rules!
These are just temporary digs for them, and once they're comfortable with the place I plan on letting them free range most days... from what I've read, most turkeys prefer to roost out in the elements - tree branches, deck railings, etc. The roost area for mine is between 2 large pine trees, plus there's a tarp over the back of the kennel that extends up and over the side, so even if they choose not to roost where 'I' think they should, there's still a fair amount of protection. Its rumored to be a cold winter here in PA, we'll have to see how they do and improvise as needed!

Im very jealous, I want to some day have a few turkey 2 home and process them for thxgivings....but I'm still in the city! lol Well done and good luck!

Nice!

I also am on the track to new turkey ownership. The funny thing is I don't really care for turkey all that much and only eat it once a year but I love their personalities and there is a major shortage of folks raising heritage breeds around my area. So I figure I can always sell my extras or help stock up my families freezers.

Congrats on your new pair and it looks like they are enjoying the temp digs!

I love your set up. I am thinking of adding one myself but just as a pet. I don't know if they would get along with my 4 hens in the same 10' x 10' x 6' high run. I just love hanging out with my hens and have been intrigued by owning a pet turkey for a long time. I love your temp digs for the pair! You did such a great job. My hen coop is on the outside of the run so it isn't taking up the space and I would try to do the same way for a turkey home. I hope they are doing well.

yes they will get along well with ur chickens i have 4 chickens and introduced the new turkey last year she settled in well they all perch together so i added 2 this year they get on well ,at first the young turkeys would huddle under my old one bless they thought she was mum.they all get on together with my chickens and cockerel but they like to sleep out side the shed... also id like to say I'm a veggie and they are for eggs and are my pets...turkeys lay great eggs at least 5 a week from march till end october...

If you enjoy raising chickens, you'll love turkeys!

Bantam Chase, it looks like I am going to be joining you in the 'NEW to Turkeys'!! A co-worker of my husband is wanting to get rid of 5 BBW (Broad Breasted Whites) hens. They are 10 weeks old and supposedly all ready as big as my chickens!! I have two days to get ready for them. We pick them up on Saturday and I am excited and reading everything I can. (It is 2:30 AM and I am researching!!) I hope to eventually combine the chickens with the poults. I have a coop kinda/sorta ready for them. Tomorrow (or today) I will pick up shavings and food and get the coop ready to go. Any tips, please lay them on me. Thanks!

Lisa :)

Have fun, Lisa! My pair is 7 months old so they're way past the chicken size! I'm actually amazed at how large they are! I don't plan on keeping my turkeys with my chickens since blackhead is a concern, but I do plan on letting them out to free range together in the yard but will deworm as needed.
I'd ask the gal how the birds are used to living - do they perch, do they go into a barn or just a covered shelter, etc. And plan on being flexible - my birds are not doing a thing I expected them to!

Be sure to quarantine new birds for 30 days, before you introduce them to your flocks!

If blackhead is a concern in your area, how can they free range with your chickens?
