Hi All - after I successfully pulled off my first Thanksgiving dinner where all 17 guests were impressed to be eating home-grown corn, green bean casserole and sweet potatoes, I decided that I wanted to try raising turkeys... (have one for the table next year and also do a traditional BB). Yesterday I built a temporary coop, today (I swear I'm not impulsive!) I picked up a young pair of Narragansetts. Let the learning curve begin, lol! Already they're hiding in the section where I thought they wouldn't - guess turkeys make up their own set of rules!
These are just temporary digs for them, and once they're comfortable with the place I plan on letting them free range most days... from what I've read, most turkeys prefer to roost out in the elements - tree branches, deck railings, etc. The roost area for mine is between 2 large pine trees, plus there's a tarp over the back of the kennel that extends up and over the side, so even if they choose not to roost where 'I' think they should, there's still a fair amount of protection. Its rumored to be a cold winter here in PA, we'll have to see how they do and improvise as needed!
