Hi all. After loitering here for a week now, I thought it was time to join. I have learned a great deal from all the articles and other threads. It seems like a very supportive and friendly place to learn about chickens. My family and I moved to Virginia from Alaska in May and decided that this 10 acres needed a few chickens. Our two oldest daughters (9 and 11) eagerly awaited the chicken coop being built and now we have 5 little chicks. We bought them from the Bluemont General Store in Bluemont Virginia. They are supposed to be mixed breed Bantams. If we end up with a Rooster, we can take it back and get a female in exchange. We have had them for just over a week now and they were supposed to be 1 week old when we got them. You can see a picture of them on my avatar.

They spend the warm days in their little scratch yard and then go back to the brooder in the evening. I am worrying and fretting like a brand new mommy, but they are doing well in spite me.

Again, this looks like a great place for me and my girls to get great information and share information. I will most likely need help sexing the chicks because I have probably looked at 100 threads and they all look the same to me. :)

One is growing like crazy and we are beginning to wonder if a big chick got mixed in with our Bantams. Only time will tell. I feel like waiting for Christmas to see what these little cuties will look like when they grow up.
