Hi all. I have wanted chickens for YEARS, but live in the village. I have recently heard I can have 4 hens but need to confirm with codes (I hope it is true) I already have a shed for potential housing but also have a celler with bilco doors and am entertain the idea of a small coop in there for safe night keeping.
I think I would use a small tractor for the day as there are quite a few cats around.

I would not keep chickens in the cellar. You should be able to convert the shed into a coop. Once the flock is grown, cats rarely pose a threat. Unless they are very large and feral.

Welcome to BYC. I agree with what @DobieLover said. The cellar would not have enough ventilation and it would probably be hard to clean and remove the ammonia smell.
I have cats and chickens and there are plenty of stray cats around here. I've never had one harm a chicken but a tractor or a shed with a built on run is for the best.
