New visitor came for breakfast !!!! 3 pics

Wow, what a tale!

I think that because you were "chasing" him, he decided to retreat. Probably a good game plan, if you are wanting to look like a threat. Just don't let your guard down. Do those things sometimes hunt in "packs"? Well, anyway, just be alert.

You know the story about riding in the car and the kids are complaining are we there yet.... well, my son was wanting to go swimming while we on vacation in South Carolina this past weekend. We went to the river in Honey Hill, SC and my son asked for the 100th time to go swiming. We told him it was still to cold to go swimming. Well about 10 minutes on the boat we heard a splash and saw a 10 to 12 foot gator. My hubby then asked my son if he still wanted to go swimming. The answer was a definitive no.

Again, it's a real eye opener to to have that gator - and all the other things around you there. The Bayous would be a thrilling place to live. I lived in and around the swamps of both N. Fl an S. Fl for years. I did a lot of fishing and hunting back then. Truly fascinating ecosystem. And full of pitfalls for the unwary.

This thread continues to bother me. Here's Jordan chiming in now, wishing HE could play with one! I'm certain you're smart enough to do so, but allow me to re-iterate:
Please avoid that gator and leave him alone.
Ditto your neighbors. He's got a place in the system, and it would be wise to let him have it to himself.

He doesn't care about eco-friendliness, being "cool" or other niceties. He's only interested in one thing, as far you are concerned - whether you're on the dinner menu. Im certain you or your chickens don't fancy being an entree on his meal card. Fence them from the waters edge and dont turn your back when you are there yourself.

This thread continues to go from "Wheeeeee chickens!

" to "Yippeeeeeee, alligator!

" Not good. Sorry, that's just me. While fishing, I've seen gators explode from the water to take birds, right at the shore and gator kill remains... not pretty.

I'll stop beating this dead horse and get my coat now. Good Luck...

The bayou is beautiful. I'm envious that you get to look in your back yard and see that every day. However, an alligator in the back would be of great concern to me since I have dogs. Dogs are alligators' most favorite food. They'd probably go for the chickens as well, but dogs are a proven favorite target. We were in Gulf Shores one day when a family was picnicing with their golden retriever, and it was attacked by a gator. Luckily, it survived and was rushed to the vet. No idea what happened after that. Most dogs are not that lucky. They have had people walking dogs on leashes along Lake Shelby and had gators take them with the owners there just a couple of feet away. Size doesn't really matter against a gator. Watch your dogs awfully closely and do not depend on them to scare a gator away. They will actually attract a hungry one. All that being said, I LOVE gators and think they are fascinating creatures. Just never trust them around your pets. They will eat a dog in a heartbeat.

How lucky you are to live in such a beautiful environment! We do, too, but of course, totally different than what you have. I hope you get some good pics and see lots of other cool stuff. I need to spend more time going out with a camera...
