Nipple waterers and poop boards!

So I had chickens (sheep, rabbits, pigs and a steer) as a young kid (+35 years ago) and found out several months ago that 2 of my kids have friends with backyard chickens. I've always thought if would be nice for my kids to learn more about where their food comes from since we live in a large metro area. And I think technically my yard isn't quite big enough to have backyard chickens, but right before Easter I figured, "what the heck" let's throw the idea out there and see if it sticks.

Well, we've had 4 chicks (2 EE's and 2 SLW's) in our cardboard brooder for almost a month now and things are going smoothly. Been working on coop plans and hope to start the building in several weeks. (Boy, chicks get big real fast)

I'm so glad I found BYC and have learned so much during my lurking. Thanks everyone.

Thank you! We all love to hear the stories about people who get chicks around Easter and keep them and enjoy them! What kind of coop are you planning on? There are so many examples here that your next new vocabulary lesson might be "coop envy!"

Or "chicken addiction"....Welcome to BYC, the spot where you can get all your chicken info. This site has really saved me alot of time and given me great ideas!

Let's not forget about "fart eggs"...lol...be sure to put that one down. And

Yup. Gotta add "fart egg" to the list.

Actually, my plan was not to get Easter chicks. I was going to build the coop first and then buy 4-6 month old pullets in May. But then me and 2 of the youngens went to the feed store to see what stuff they had for supplies and those chicks were so cute. Although I did resist the urge to buy them on that trip. I went home and discussed it with the boss and got a little extra convincin' from my DD. How could the DW say no. So we went back 2 hours and did the deed.
