New York to get the "Enterprise"

Not so fast......there is a serious movement by the Texas members in Congress to NOT allow this to happen. They want one of the shuttles to be placed at the Johnson Space Center in Houston which is one of the largest NASA complexes. It is the home base of NASA and Mission Control for all flights into space.
When they retire them all the plan is to give the Discovery to the Air and Space Museum in DC and give the Enterprise which is currently at the NASPM to NY and the Intrepid Museum. We shall see what will become of it all but there is some serious debate going on currently about where they will all end up.

Didn't they decide on where 4 of the shuttles were going? The Boeing Museum of Flight wanted one, but ended up with the flight trainer.

Even better.. why dont they sell the things to private collectors with the clause that they have to be put on public display.
After spending billions of dollars on them, you think they could do something practical with them when they were done..

But I am curious... why is NY getting it? I don't know much about NASA but I didn't think there was a base in NY... seems that the city that's home to the liftoff is where a ship should come home to roost. But that's just me.... and clearly I'm officially a chicken person (after only a year) if I'm talking roosting in regards to giant rockets. Oh well.

I think NY is getting it because, well simply put it always comes down to the almighty dollar. I'm sure there is some kind of backdoor deal going on.
Also...PineappleMama there is a backup landing strip in Newburgh NY. It is I believe the largest landing strip on the east coast if not the entire nation. It is the Stewart International Airport located about 75 miles north of NYC.

That's great. I went to that museum after driving by it a 100 times wondering what it was. That's going to be a tight fit. Are they going to put it on the deck? They might have to make a space for it on the ground.

I heard they will be putting it on the deck but they will build a large glass enclosure to protect from the elements like sea air.

I think it is a done deal. Also I'm sure TX will get at least one of the retired shuttles. And as for Congress... I think they should spend their time and our tax dollars in a much more productive way.

Space Shuttle Discovery - Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum to replace the Enterprise prototype.

Space Shuttle Atlantis - Florida at the Kennedy Space Center after NASA removes all the dangerous fluids and equipment.

Space Shuttle Endeavour - California Science Center in Los Angeles after flying her Space Shuttle mission later this month.

Enterprise prototype - the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum

Would have been cool to see one of them at the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson here in Ohio....

Long time no talk!

KSC is a no brainer, ditto for the Smithsonian. But Cali and NY? No politics involved there, eh?
