Hey.

Im I've only just started keeping hens. I've got 4 black orpingtons that's I raised from day old chicks. And I've just attepted to hatch some eggs given by a colleague. That didn't go too well I only ended up with 2 fluffy chicks (2days ago) but I haven't got a clue what type they are.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Morning, welcome to BYC!

If you could post a clear full body picture of your chicks, someone might be able to identify. You can post here and/or on this link:

Sorry you were disappointed with the results of your hatch, but at least you got 2 new fluffy butts!

Nice to have you join us

Orps sure are a great breed to keep. Very docile and friendly. As for your poor hatch, lots of things can cause a hatch to go bad from where you got the eggs, how they were stored before setting, your incubator and the temps and humidity levels during the cycle, genetics, etc...Many times your first hatch is an experiment. And each hatch you learn more and more about what you are doing.

Definitely follow the link the NorthFLChick has left for you to help sex your chicks.

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Two chicks are twice as many as none.
