We got our first chickens in March 2020. I was dead-set on getting chickens and told my husband that I was going after work to get some. He beat me to it and got four ISA Brown chicks ( I probably would have gotten at least twice that of all different types.
So we started with four, but we just lost one about a week ago. Two got themselves in trouble and then they both got infected while I was out of town. A round of antibiotics and some care did the trick for one, Sky, but not the other, Storm.
My favorite thing about raising chickens is their personalities and how much the kids love them and taking care of them. The eggs are a huge bonus. In addition to dreams of a mini homestead, I also love crocheting, sewing, and different types of building/wood working.
I work in the medical field and my family is kind of all over the place right now. I found BYC because I am moving in a few months and want to ensure that I find a place where I can keep and grow my flock. I’m focusing in one area, but there are a ton of home owners associations and I was unable to find all of the HOA rules to see if chickens are allowed. My online search for keeping chickens in that area brought me to BYC!
