Hi All,

Found this good looking forum through a winding Google search, that I think started out about pigs. Anyways, as the topic title says, I don't have chickens yet. In nine days, I won't even have a home - temporarily that is.

My family and I are moving out rurally, but everything probably won't be ready until October.

So I've got till then until spring 2014 to get a coop built, get some fencing set up, plant some forage, and order some chickies.

There are no government inspected poultry processors in the area, so any meat birds are just for my family. We are also looking forward to having our own laying hens, with maybe a few sales at the 'farm gate' to help defer costs - either that or take eggs to the local grading station so that I can sell them off our property. Lots of time to figure that stuff out.

We would also like to try out some ducks, geese, turkeys and whatever else in the next few years as we get our feet wet.

If there is anyone from the Thunder Bay area that has suggestions on what grows well up here for forage, or which breeds they would suggest (and are available) I'm all ears and would appreciate any input.

Looking forward to learning a lot!

We do have many members from various parts of Canada- you may want to go to "where am I, where are you" thread to see if their is a Canadian thread for Ontario. That would put you in touch with others from your area

Thanks for the directions. Looks like there are lots of threads in the 'where am I' forum for Ontario, so I picked a couple of the most recent ones and the Canadian Check-in thread to boot.

I'll probably check in on the Minnesota thread too, since growing conditions and climate in Minnesota are much closer to my part of Ontario than most of the members in other regions of Ontario.
