Hello All!
Been lurking for a while, but I really enjoy this site. The advice and experience given here is great.
I’m new to chickens, for all intents and purpose. I raised a few chickens/ducks/geese in my youth, but that was many, many years ago. So I’m happy to take on the moniker of ‘newb’. J
We bought 8 Buf Orpingtons first weekend of April. There was 1 rooster among the pullets. In May I built my first coop/run, 8’x12’ coop with 12’x32’ run. Those chickens were so much fun we bought 10 more 2ea - Americana, Road Island Reds, Barred Rock, Silver Laced Wyandot’s, and Gold Laced Wyandot’s in late May. No roosters in the second clutch – yet... The Buf Orp’s have been in the coop since the first part of June, and the others are going out there today (with some fencing to isolate them from the first group for a while).
My wife and I really enjoy chicken TV. They are fun to watch and note the different behaviors among the birds. We have had some issues with pecking in the 2nd flock. The other birds opened up a bleeding wound on the back of one of the Americana’s, so I have isolated those 2 birds, and they are doing fine.
I found BYC while reading Raising Chickens for Dummies last year. Been lurking since then.
My main hobby right now is clearing our property here in Beavercreek Ore. It’s pretty much overrun with Himalayan blackberries and Scotch Broom. So mowing, sawing, piling, chipping and burning is pretty much all I do for fun (outside of chicken TV of course). Professionally I’m a database administrator for an multi-national truck manufacturer. I work on Oracle, SQL Server and DB2 databases. I classify it as a hobby because I love it – I just get paid to do it.
My wife Brenda and I have been married for 32 years. We successfully raised 2 functional adult children, and we have a grand daughter who is the joy of our life. We live on a 22 acre property that we hope will someday be a farm of some sort. We also have a ‘yip yip’ dog and a cat.
