Hi, my name is Chris and I want to start raising a few egg layers, 6-8. Never done this before and have no clue what I am doing. I have good mechanical skills so I know I can build what I need. So any advice is welcomed!

Hi Chris!

Welcome to BYC from Ohio! My advice would be to build a coop at least twice as large as you think you want.......Chickens are so addicting! You'll want MORE!

Also, for egglayers, just think about what color eggs you want....I was always fond of brown eggs, but I like variety.....Look at size (the bigger they are, the more they eat), temperament, cold or heat hardiness, and egg size and frequency in laying.

A great catalog to get, which I used when I first made my selections, is the Meyer Hatchery catalog. It has great pics, plus very good descriptions of all the breeds, so it's really a great tool to help you decide what breed of chickens to start with. (Even if you don't order from them.)

Well, have a wonderful weekend and glad you joined,
Sharon

from NW Ohio. Chicmom gave great advise. Meyer's catalog is available online as well.

Expect lots of surprises, laughs, anxiety, and fun.

This is a great forum for info and advise.
