Hello all, I am new to this group and loving all the information/opinions! I am planning to start raising chickens in my nice fairly good sized fenced backyard soon. Coop and run in the process and now need to decide on which hens - only want to have 4-6 hens and not sure if I will add a roo? Cheers, Sue-Sue

Welcome to BYC (BackYardChickens), @Sue-Sue48! I'm sure you'll find that chickens are very addicting, so you might want to consider making the coop a little larger than you have planned.

I recommend Barred Plymouth Rocks! They are very friendly and pretty (or handsome, in the reporter's case) and good layers to! I have heard that they also make good meat birds but I haven't tried that.

Roosters are great! There are plenty of articles of BYC to help keep you rooster from becoming aggressive, so why not? (Well, there is the crowing, but still...;))
