Hi, I'm Shawn. I have just bought my little farm in Weatherford, Tx. My dream is to start getting a few animals and chickens. I have a nice fenced in chicken yard, nesting boxes, and perches. The chicken house/ barn is totally enclosed with chicken wire. I have read multiple threads that say animals get through the wire. What should I replace it with??

Hi and welcome to BYC. General consensus is that chicken wire keeps chickens confined, but doesn’t keep predators out, I believe. Here are some helpful links:

Hi Shawn, congratulations on your new place! Hardware cloth is what is usually recommended in place of chicken wire.

1/2" HARDWARE CLOTH is considered the "gold standard," for chickens. 1/4" would be even better and I'm guessing would keep snakes out also.

As said above, 1/2" Hardware cloth is the way to go, but 1/4" is my favorite.

Hi. I'm new, too. I got 1/4" & 1/2" hardware cloth after reading up on what to get. I put them over the top of my chicken wire. The 1/4" was easier to manage, but both worked really well.
