Hi! I've just joined this site today and am loving it already. XP

I didn't know how many people actually own, raise, and breed chickens...I'd thought we were a lost breed of people! Turns out there are far more than I previously thought!

Anyway...I have two chickens who are brooding at the moment, lying on eggs. Each one has probably five or so eggs underneath them. Last year's hatching wasn't so successful, for we had ordered chicks from a site, and more than half died, from either heatstroke, disease, or just terrible living conditions. D:

I hope this year's hatch goes much better! ^_^ Any suggestions or advice for my chicks once they've hatched? I've raised chicks before---one of the nesting hens at the moment was one of two chicks two years ago about---so I know how to handle most of the things necessary.

Well, I am loving this site already, glad to be a part of it! :) Can't wait to get into it more. :p

Glad you joined us here.

Hope your hatch goes better this time around! I've never hatched before, so I can't give you any advice there. But there are TONS of members here who do, so you'll definitely get some great info.

Welcome to the site. There are two rules for raising baby chicks from your own brood.

1) Let mama do the mamain'; they've been doing it for thousands of years.
2) See rule #1

Do you have an incubator? One thing I've experienced is a hen leaving the nest as soon as one or two chicks have hatched leaving perfectly viable eggs that may be a day behind schedule exposed to the elements. As day 21 approaches, I go ahead and calibrate my styrofoam incubator. If she stays on the nest, great, but if she leaves immediately, I go ahead and transfer any left over eggs to the incubator for at least a couple of days, just in case.

Once they're hatched, I sneak them back down to the nest after dark and slip them under the hen. When she wakes up the next morning, she just assumes she miscounted.

Hello and :welcome

Yeah, a lot of chook folk, seems chicken keeping is becoming more popular, I always seem to be stumbling across someone who owns chickens.
Better luck with your hatch this time, I agree to let the hen take care of things, that's always the best way.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and enjoy the site. :frow
