Hello from a normal neighborhood home in Tennessee! On June 1st we welcomed 4 new additions to our happy family...an Americauna, an Australorp, a Silver-laced Wyandotte, and a Gold-laced Wyandotte. We think our little flock is about 5 weeks old. Aside from that lovely aroma they produce, we have thoroughly enjoyed having them inside. They have entertained us and we have entertained them. A couple of days ago we introduced them to our chicken tractor - only for a brief period of time. They have loved being outside! The grass, the bugs...even the dogs, have fascinated them. (Of course, we're keeping a close eye on the level of fascination that is taking place between the chickie and the dogs.) Today I have had the chicks out for most of the day. If they have plenty of fresh food (medicated chicken starter), water, grit, and an occasional mealworm treat, is it okay to start leaving them outside? I have read several threads before actually joining this forum and seen a variety of advice, but would truly appreciate any helpful advice. Thank you very much!

! Great to have you here! By this time of year and their age your chicks should be fine! Make sure they have some shade outside. Good luck to you!

Welcome to BYC! This is the best place to learn about keeping chickens and sharing your chicken experience with others.

Thank y'all for the warm welcomes! I have to tell you that I ended up bringing my chickies in last night. Just after dusk I was outside checking the garden and I noticed the girls were trying their best to follow me. They were running and chirping, kind of panicked. So I got the bus out (aka the cardboard box) and opened the chicken tractor door. Those little bitties nearly flew into the box and didn't try to escape even once. I slept well knowing they were safe and sound inside the house!
Now they're having a different adventure. I put them out this morning and they are weathering their first afternoon shower, even as I type this. I keep looking out the window and I think they're doing fine...Why does this feel a bit like sending my kids to school for the first time?? Lol!

Hello and welcome....so glad you joined BYC

I know exactly how you feel. My chicks were practically laying eggs before I would let them stay outside overnight :) Just kidding. They do love to be outside more than anything.
