Hi, I'm Bette Wilson and I've ordered 4 chicks (Blue-Laced Wyandotte) and 10 other layers Five are a variety of laying pullets and the other 5 are Plymouth Rock pullets).

I've been reading up on raising chicks and am going blind from all the reading an taking notes, etc. It makes it sound very daunting to raise and keep chickens. I just hope the City will go along with it. We live in tiny little town where the biggest industries are grain mills which are located all around us and most of the patrons of any of the businesses here are farmers, which is great. But I am forced to go to the city council on Monday and ask for a $45 permit. Get this, the new ordinances were put together that if you own an acre of land in town (right) then you are able to get a permit to have 1 horse, 1 llama, 1 alpaca, etc. But, to have 1 chicken they think you should have 10 acres for one chicken. (Can you believe it?) If they don't allow it, I will be keeping them indoors and sneaking them out into our garden with a tall fence so no one is the wiser. You can't tell I've been bitten by the chicken but, do you?

Well, wish me luck and if any of you have any good ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,
Bette

good luck

Yes, good luck. I hope you are able to get some changes made. I would hate to think of 14 chickens having to spend most of their time indoors! Both for you and for them! Or worse, you having to get rid of them after putting in a lot of time and effort raising them.

At least I'll have a chance to plead my case and, if nothing else, ask for a 6 month permit, as we're planning on going south for the winter and living on our buddy's property and his wife is more than interested in going back to her younger years and raise some chickens. So, I told her that I would bring them down when we leave in November and I'll at least be able to spend another 6 months with them and, who knows, I might just want to raise some more baby chicks for six months next year. I'll do whatever I'm able to.

! Great to have you aboard! Hope you are able to get chickens. I will admit the sheer volume of material on BYC can be daunting. But in reality chickens are quite easy to manage - the proper food, water, and shelter and you're won well over half the battle. You can do it!!

Thank you. I have to wait until May 15th for the chicks to arrive. I don't know if I'll be able to wait. I may have to go to TSC and find a couple chicks to tide me over.

Hello, and welcome to BYC!!
