Hi, I'm Bette Wilson and I've ordered 4 chicks (Blue-Laced Wyandotte) and 10 other layers Five are a variety of laying pullets and the other 5 are Plymouth Rock pullets).
I've been reading up on raising chicks and am going blind from all the reading an taking notes, etc. It makes it sound very daunting to raise and keep chickens. I just hope the City will go along with it. We live in tiny little town where the biggest industries are grain mills which are located all around us and most of the patrons of any of the businesses here are farmers, which is great. But I am forced to go to the city council on Monday and ask for a $45 permit. Get this, the new ordinances were put together that if you own an acre of land in town (right) then you are able to get a permit to have 1 horse, 1 llama, 1 alpaca, etc. But, to have 1 chicken they think you should have 10 acres for one chicken. (Can you believe it?) If they don't allow it, I will be keeping them indoors and sneaking them out into our garden with a tall fence so no one is the wiser. You can't tell I've been bitten by the chicken but, do you?
Well, wish me luck and if any of you have any good ideas, please let me know.
Thanks,
Bette
