Newbie chick delimma

There is the risk that she could kill the chick. If you cannot accept that risk then I'd skip it because it is a real risk at this point.

The gallon milk jug I used was when it was around 10 degrees outside, inside a metal shed (uninsulated), inside a hutch with 200 watt bulbs burning. It was cold in the morning.

I had put one on the floor for my lone silkie too who wouldn't get on the roost with the other silkies and it was cold too.

Well, in the confusion of night she let him under her... Hopefully in the morning all will go well! Thanks!

Glad to read this post. My white silkie hen hatched two babies in th elast day or so and she had been hiding them under her wing. My husband found them this morning and we put the Hen and the two chicks in a crate by themselves. I was afraid they would be too cold and so was happy to hear the hen's warmth would be enough. We have hatched chicks in the incubators but this is the first time the hen has done the job herself. They are so cute.

Happy news! Mama hen has accepted the chick I slipped in last night (maybe he was there all along right?) Yay!
