! Pleased to have you aboard! "Best" can mean different things to different people. If by sheer numbers of eggs the champion would probably be the Leghorn. The commercial egg industry - the white eggs you buy in the store - are generally from Leghorns - they lay a lot and don't eat much. Below is a great chart that describes various breeds and their attributes. Good luck to you in your research!

I have Easter Eggers and they've been laying about four eggs per day among the five of them. That seems pretty great to me! Plus the eggs are BEAUTIFUL colors. I am raising two Black Copper Marans, which I've heard lay a lot less, like maybe 2 or three per week, but their eggs will be a beautiful dark brown, so I will be happy with that. The hatchery websites, like Meyers, and My Pet Chicken have a lot of info on the different breeds' weather hardyness and egg production.

Hi and welcome to BYC..... for me and generally the best layers ever are red sex links or red stars or golden commets.... these are the same breed with several names ... they lay big brown eggs and often double yorkers!!! And they lay even in winter.... approximately 300 eggs a year for a good one....... and the leghorns are great layers too... they lay big white eggs as good as the red stars.... but they tend to be flighty and noisier than red stars that are generally very calm and sweet.... the RIR are very good layers too...
