Hi, I am finally after years of waiting getting my first chickens this summer. I've been reading the forum for a few days and getting loads of good info.

I'm going to get 6 hens and would really like blue egg layers. I've got a bit of work to do on the garden to get everything ready first though.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. If you want blue egg layers, you need to look into breeds such as Ameraucanas, Araucanas, or Cream Legbars. Beware of buying Easter Eggers under the labels Ameraucana or Araucana. Some hatcheries and feed stores incorrectly market their Easter Eggers under the labels Ameraucana or Araucana when they are not true Ameraucanas or Araucanas. Easter Eggers are hybrids that are produced by crossing blue egg layers with brown egg layers to produce offspring that will lay eggs in colors other than just blue, and while some Easter Eggers do lay blue eggs; other EEs lay green, beige, or sometimes even pale pink eggs. The only hatchery that sells true Ameraucanas is Meyer Hatchery, which sells Blue Ameraucanas, and they charge 5 times as much for them as they do for their Easter Eggers. There is a good article at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/09/ameraucana-easter-egger-or-araucana.html explaining the difference between Araucanas, Ameraucanas, and Easter Eggers. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your blue egg layers.

So glad you could join our community! You've made an excellent decision to get some chickens! If you want blue eggs, you'll want to get Ameraucanas or Araucanas, or Cream Legbars. If you don't mind green eggs or pink eggs along with some blue ones, Easter Eggers will be fine, too. I've really enjoyed my Easter Egger, as she's had a good temperament and been very good at laying.

Good luck with your future poultry adventures! Raising chickens can be so much fun and quite exciting.
